Trimmed down relief package failed in Senate.
Mark Meadows, the White House Chief of Staff, said the administration is reportedly considering issuing a new round of executive actions since hopes for a bipartisan coronavirus package have all but died.
White House officials have discussed efforts to unilaterally provide support for the beleaguered airline industry and bolstering unemployment benefits. The administration is also weighing moving without Congress on allocating more money for school vouchers, and changing President Trump’s temporary payroll tax deferral to make it more effective.
President Trump has floated the possibility of reallocating $300 billion in unused coronavirus relief funds to send Americans a second $1,200 stimulus check. He suggested he could use executive authority to release the money, but said he would prefer that Congress sign off on the proposal.
The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the authority to determine federal spending.
